EXPLORE KOUFONISIA
Located in the small Eastern Cyclades, Koufonisia islands consist of two islets, Ano and Kato Koufonisi and they are separated by a narrow strait, 200m wide. Geographically, they are located southeast of Naxos and west of Amorgos. They belong to the homonymous community, which also encompasses the island of Keros and several smaller islets around the main islands. Keros is a small uninhabited island, which hosts meaningful findings of the Cycladic culture.
Chora is the only settlement in Koufonisia (Ano Koufonisi), built on the southwest side, above the picturesque, small port. East of the port, it's the beginning of the island's main road, which leads to the accommodation and the wonderful beaches. Koufonisia don't require vehicles. There are no paved roads, and all the distances are very short. You can walk, rent a bike or get in a boat and explore the beautiful seashores. The boat routes to the beaches of Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi are regular, especially in the summertime.
BEACHES
Golden beaches in Ano and Kato Koufonisi
Although they're small, like all the small islands of Eastern Cyclades, Koufonisia islands boast some of the most impressive beaches in Greece. Heavenly and sandy with crystal clear, emerald waters, the blissful beaches are framed by sparkling dunes or golden sculpted rocks that create mystifying sea caves and hidden coves. The mountains of Naxos and Amorgos protect them from the summer meltemi, which is innate in Cyclades. Crowded or isolated, all gorgeous, the beaches of Koufonisia are thought to be deliberately made to seduce you.
On the southwest side of Ano Koufonisi, there is Parianos, a sheltered bay with a wide sandy beach, which is also a harbor for fishing boats. The coast of the port, Ammos, with the big granular shore and the clear shallow waters, just a few steps away from the settlement, is preferred by locals, children, and those who don't want to move around. However, the most magnificent beaches are gathered on the east side of the island.
At the end of the seaside road, we can see Finikas (Harokopou). A shining sandy shore with turquoise waters, ideal for family moments. Next is Fanos, another sandy beach with emerald waters. After a row of small coves for lonely visitors, we reach Italiana (Platia Punta), the island's most famous beach and one of the most alluring beaches of Cyclades. Italidaki, a little bay at its start, is overwhelmed by carefree people who consider the swimsuits unnecessary.
As you proceed to the east, you will discern several small coves with smooth sand or pebbles, and huge rocks that compose beauteous caves. Between them lies the Pool, a natural rock cavity with crystal clear waters. North-east of Ano Koufonisi is Pori, a large golden sandy beach, one of the most appealing beaches in Cyclades and perfect for windsurfing. At the northern edge of the island is located the Cape of Xylovati, overlooking beautiful Naxos and Gala, with sea caves and clear waters. Kato Koufonisi has evenly marvelous beaches, but even more secluded. The most renowned are Phyki, Deti, Nero, and Pezoulia.

CELEBRATIONS
One of the most prominent events occurs in honor of St. George, the patron of the island. Every year, a resident ordained in Agios, called "panegyras", performs the procession of the idol in streets covered with rose petals throughout the island. The procession ends in the village, where a traditional feast follows.
The Easter celebration is genuinely significant for Koufonisia. In a spirit of deep religious devoutness on Holy Friday, the entire island is illuminated by torches. The epitaph procession is carried out with the accompaniment of fireworks, smoke, and other effects set up on the village's main beach.
On the last Saturday of June, the residents of Koufonisia, who are distinguished fishermen, organize the annual fisherman's celebration. Fresh fish, delectable appetizers, and refreshing drinks are offered to everyone. Moreover, the celebration in memory of Prophet Elias, on July 20, is completed with an island feast and traditional songs. Finally, in Koufonisia, we celebrate the feast of St. Nicolas in a unique way as well as Christmas, when the older residents sing the christmas carols and create magical moments.
On the 15th of August, most residents travel to Kato Koufonisi, to celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, where they attend the devotional in the homonymous church. After that, the island's citizens offer fried fish and lamb or goat to the people. An innovative ferry race takes place with the return of the boats to Koufonisi. Prospective sailors compete to be the first to arrive at the port. At the end of the night, there is a festival with traditional food to the sounds of the violins.
